This is part of an occasional series by the Sanpete Country Travel and Utah Heritage Highway 89 Alliance on the people and places along U.S. Highway 89.

Sanpete County Gearing Up For July 24

The cities and towns in Sanpete County and along U.S. Highway 89, the Heritage Highway, are planning numerous activities and events in celebration of Utah s Pioneer Day July 24th.  FAIRVIEW:
  Celebrations will be held at the city s rodeo grounds and park starting Wednesday, July 21, and continuing through Saturday, July 24. On Wednesday night, there will be a youth dance at the dance hall/park after dusk. Starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, there will several events at the rodeo grounds, including an old-fashion kids rodeo, steer riding, a farm scramble, barrel racing and clown acts. On July 23, there will be a horse parade down State Street at 6 p.m., followed by entertainment at the rodeo grounds and an 8 p.m. P.C.R.C. Championship Rodeo. On Pioneer Day, the festivities begin with the annual "Fireman's Wake-up" at 6:30 a.m. and the fun run at 7 a.m. at the rodeo grounds. There will also be a 7 a.m. flag ceremony and breakfast. At 9 a.m. there will be a Daughter's of the Utah Pioneers' program at the Fairview 2 & 3 ward houses and a 10 a.m. craft fair at the Fairview Dance Hall and park. The kids' parade is at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mammoth Parade at 11 a.m. along State Street and lunch in the park at noon. Kids games begin in the park at 1 p.m., with entertainment throughout the day. The 20th annual demolition derby begins at 7 p.m. and the fireworks display and patriotic program will be at 10 p.m. Information: (435) 427-3817.

FOUNTAIN GREEN:
  Fountain Green will celebrate the Pioneer holiday with its annual Lamb Days July 16-17. The youth lamb show will be at 2 p.m. on Friday. That night, there will be a mutton and sourdough dinner in the city park and an 8 p.m. youth talent show. On Saturday, a fun run will be held at 6:30 a.m. followed by a flag ceremony and chuck wagon breakfast starting at 7 a.m. At 9 a.m., there will be a craft fair and entertainment and activities in the city park, including rides, a lamb sale, games and other programs. A parade will be held at noon. At 9 p.m., there will be a dance for people 14 years of age and older. Information: (435) 445-3453

SPRING CITY:
  The celebrations begin Friday, July 23 with an 8 p.m. street dance on Main Street in front of the Post Office, with music by the Firehawks. On the 24th, the day begins with a 7 a.m. Fireman's Breakfast and kick-off for daylong children's carnival and events. There will be a 10 a.m. children's parade, followed by lunch, concessions, a rock climbing wall and carnival at the Spring City Park next to the City Hall. Softball games will be held all day. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be an antique car display in the park. There will also be an old-time gospel music program. Information: (435) 462-3638

CENTERFIELD:
  There will be a parade July 23 at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at the LDS Ward on Highway 89. On July 24, the day starts with a 7 a.m. breakfast at the LDS Ward on Highway 89 followed by daylong activities, concessions, games and entertainment. Information: (435) 528-3296

MAYFIELD:
  July 24 activities include a 10 a.m. mammoth parade followed by daylong activities, train rides, fish pond, cow chip throw, games, entertainment and concessions, and a Wild River duck race. All activities will take place in the Main Street City Park. Information: (435) 528-7031
